Breaking Sod

The garden work continues. I am very eager to get some seed potatoes and onions planted. That means taking the next step and getting the half dead sod turned over. Here I am about half way through. The whole job took me about three hours. Well, it probably wouldn't have been so long if I didn't have to constantly keep stopping to remind other people to not throw dirt at one another or to stay out of the way of my shovel handle. You know, things like that.
In my three hours of pure manual labor, a lot went through my mind. First I was thinking that I should have just rented a tiller. Then I was thinking about the Ingalls family out there on the prairie. At least Pa had a pair of oxen to break sod. I would have to say that this is one of those times when I could actually say how I knew what it was like out there on the prairie. Breaking that sod really was tough in that rocklike Indiana clay. Thank goodness it rained yesterday and softened up the ground a little.

And I finished just in time for the rain to roll in. Hopefully it lets up by tomorrow when my three yards of soil gets delivered. I could really use a tractor right now. Where are all my tractor owning friends???
Some other people didn't work quite as hard in the yard. Fortunately, Evie did a good job of playing with Annalise.

Annalise really wore herself out today. She didn't take a nap and by the end of the day, she was asking to go to bed.
We also got a package from Grandma and Grandpa Taller. Thanks for the cute dresses.

Annalise liked the skirt so much she stripped off her pants and tried them on right away. They fit just right.
