Race Day--the Kindy 500

Today was the day of the big Kindy 500. The kids were all excited. During class time, they made t-shirts with checkered flags on them and their names. It was pretty special.
The event started with the Kindy Mini--a nod to the Mini Marathon. All the kids ran around the "rocket" that is in the parking lot. Evie is second from the left in the pigtails and jeans.
Here they come with Evie in the lead!
Look how fast she moves! Nothing between her and the finish line!
And there she goes while her teacher waits to wave the checkered flag.
While the other classes ran their foot races, I took some pictures of the other cars in the race. Before the race events, the kindergarteners all paraded around the school through the halls so the other classes could see them. Evie thought this was great fun as she got to walk through the lunchroom while the 3rd grade was eating.

We stood near the start/finish line and snapped some pics of individual racers and their cars.

Lighting McQueen for my Henro.
The lady in the pink boa and crown is the principal. Does she get to dress like that everyday?

And now for the main event--Evie's race! She was lined up against some serious contenders. Rainbows and butterflies mean business.
Unfortunately, in the back straightaway, she blew a front tire and went down.
Damage to the race car was pretty severe but emergency services (Mrs. Johnson) was there to assess the damage.
Evie pulled it together and finished out the race. She wasn't the only one to fall, but of course, she took the fall the hardest. She said that she was in first place when she crashed and she could have won (sounds like a grumpy Andretti to me).
When the kids finished, they received a checkered flag to cheer on their classmates.
The pit crew comes in to haul the car home. For the next kindy 500, we definitely have some adjustments to make. Annalise's car will be high, tight, and light. We have 3 years to prepare.
Annalise had fun even if the car was blown apart.

77, same number as hometown hero Sam Hornish. Evie even did what Sam does every race, wreck. "Sideways Sam" is what they call him on tv.
